There are plenty of crafts museums about town showing examples of Limoges pottery but the kaolin mines are long exhausted and any living industry is thin on the ground. The city's landmark building is Cathédrale St-Etienne which, built on the model of the cathedral at Amiens, is one of the few Gothic churches south of the Loire. Limoges has a lively student population and in late September there's an important gathering of writers, dramatists and musicians at the Festival International des Théâtres Francophones. Every other January there's a contemporary dance festival and on the third Friday of October the town's few vegetarians make exodus while everyone else hordes into the rue de la Boucherie to gorge on pig's trotters, sheep's testicals and all sorts of charming offal. TulleIn the Corrèze, this town is strung out for 3km along a deep narrow valley of the department's river. From a distance it looks bleak and grey but once you reach its heart, it's a fascinating place with lots of winding lanes and stairways bordered by very handsome houses. Firearms and lace were once the major industries of this town and it was home to France's last accordion factory. PompadourHas an imposing castle and is home to the national stud farm for Anglo-Arab horses, the varied tourists events organised every summer and their first class races, as well as a stay in the Dordogne valley for a very pleasant trip on a « gabare » (local types of wooden flat boats, replicas of XIXth century boats) Markets in the LimousinThere is nothing quite like a French street market with its varied range of fresh local produce as well as everything from pots and pans to second hand books. Limoges market often has cut price porcelaine as well as a flee market every second Sunday of the month. Other major markets in the region are Brive, Tulle, Gueret and Aubusson (famous for its tapestry) Natural Beauty of the LimousinYou can find many walks through woods and meadows where nature has been preserved intact and enhanced by farming rather than destroyed by agri-business. The Limousin is almost a gigantic natural reserve and offers remarkable "stroll natural" Walk on through the Regional Natural reserves `' Périgord the Limousin'', `' Millevaches in the Limousin'' and become refreshed and at one with nature. Mounts of Fair, Monédières, the Jaumâtres Stones favourable for excursions will reveal to you all their secrets: stone of the druids, the rock of fairies The lakes offer all the pleasures: relax with the family on the beach with the most varied nautical activities. The Route of Richard the LionheartImagine how it was 800 years ago when England's most romantic king travelled through the Haute-Vienne and met his end at Chalus in 1199
