![]() Creuse - Limousin FranceThe Limousin is made up of three Départements, which are the French equivalents of English counties. Corrèze (19), Creuse (23), Haute-Vienne (87) CreuseAs with the rest of the Limousin region, Creuse is very popular with the British and other North Europeans seeking a better quality of life in France. As with the rest of the Limousin, population density is low as are the property prices. This combination has resulted in a large influx of immigrants from the UK, Holland, Germany and Scandinavia.
La Celle Dunoise, Creuse, LimousinLocation and Cimate of CreuseCreuse is located in the Massif Central and contains the Creuse River and its tributaries. The river is dammed at several locations both for water supply and hydroelectricity generation. Typically for an inland area of continental Europe, Creuse has relatively cold winters with some snow-fall into April but also hot summers although rain-fall occurs throughout the year because of the relatively high elevation of the land. The topography is principally rolling hills intersected by often steep river valleys. The terrestrial ecology is typically cool temperate with a species mix that would not be uncommon in the western UK with oak, ash, chestnut , hazel and Prunus species dominating the woodlands. Population Of CreuseThe inhabitants of the department are called Creusois. Over the past two generations Creuse has experienced the greatest population decline of any French department, from 164,000 in 1960 to 124,000 in 1999 representing a fall of 24%.. The influx of immigrants primarily from the UK is reversing this trend but there are still property bargains to be had and this reversal means that property is an excellent investment in the region generally and this department in particular. See Property Price in the Limousin. Tourism in CreuseSince the late 1990s the Creuse has become a major tourist destination. The summers are relatively warm, but not as hot as in the southern parts of France. With forests and a few houses dominating the landscape, and very little pollution, many residents of neighboring countries (notably British and Dutch, but also German and Belgian) have sought to buy a property in the Creuse. Aubusson Tapestry in CreuseOne popular destination is Aubusson, Creuse known for its tapestry. Tapestry made something of a comeback during the 30's, with artists such as Cocteau, Dufy, Dali, Braque, Calder and Picasso being invited to Aubusson to express themselves through the medium of wool. Aubusson Tapestry still thrives today, preserving a range of traditional skills. Maison du Tapissier, CreuseThis is a permanent exhibition that is staged in an ancient Creusois house in Aubusson. The interior tells the history and traditions of tapestry as well as showing furniture of the period. Musée Départemental de la Tapisserie, CreuseCreated in 1981, the museum exhibits nearly 600 years of tapestry creation and production. This rich collection is composed of 17th, 18th and 19th Century tapestries and carpets. As well as works from its own collection, there are also regular exhibitions of tapestries from around the world, showcasing works right up to the present day. |
