![]() Correze - Limousin, FranceThe Limousin is made up of three Départements, which are the French equivalents of English counties. Corrèze (19), Creuse (23), Haute-Vienne (87) CorrèzeAs with the rest of the Limousin region, Corrèze is very popular with the British and other North Europeans seeking a better quality of life in France. As with the rest of the Limousin, population density is low as are the property prices. This combination has resulted in a large influx of immigrants from the UK, Holland, Germany and Scandinavia. History of CorrèzeAt the time of the Roman conquest, the Gallic tribe which occupied the current Limousin and beyond up to the Atlantic Ocean, was the Lemovicii. One of their main cities, Lemonum, later became known as Limoges, the regional capital of the Limousin. During the Gallo-Roman times, the territory of the current Corrèze was a part of the province of Aquitania or Aquitaine which became part of the English kings domains. There is more on this in the Haute-Vienne section under the Route of Richard the Lionheart. Outdoor Activities in CorrèzeCorrèze is popular with hikers and walkers having a generally level terrain and offers opportunity to those wishing to develop an income from tourism. Ski can be practised on the plateau of Millevaches. On this plateau, Gentioux-Pigerolles is the only skiing centre in all Limousin. Corrèze has also the largest equestrian centre in the Limousin: housing the national stud farm of Pompadour. The Arrondissements and Cantons of CorrèzeCorreze is made up of 3 Arrondissements. Unlike French regions, departments and communes, arrondissements do not have the status of legal entity in public law. In addition, unlike those other administrative divisions, they are not run by elected officials, but by officials appointed by the French president. These are further divided into cantons or administrative sub-divisions. Cantons also form legal districts as seats of Courts of First Instance. Historically the cantons are called justices de paix — or "district courts". Arrondissement of Ussel
Arrondissement of Tulle
Arrondissement of Brive-la-Gaillarde
There are some 286 communes in the Correze Department. French communes have no exact equivalent in the United Kingdom, having a status somewhere in between that of English districts and civil parishes. A French commune can be a city of 2 million inhabitants like Paris, a town of 10,000, or just a 10-person village. Climate in CorrezeAlthough summer temperatures often exceed 32 °C and have even reached 42 °C, the Limousin region has a damper and milder climate than its neighbours. Winters are often long and cold, especially in the higher areas, and snow is not at all uncommon. However the area around Brive in the Corrèze has more than 2,000 hours per year of sunshine, the same as the southern city of Toulouse. |
